Why I wake up everyday

As my friend David says,

“Everyday as I ride the bus home through the community I teach in, I silently remind myself of all the dreams that have died in these streets and those that live on resilient in my students.  That’s why I get up every morning.”

…Although I am in my second year teaching in Philadelphia, I still feel the same physical and emotional stress that I felt in the beginning days of my teaching career.  However, it is this same stress which gives me the adrenaline rush that propels me through each day.

Nevertheless, this work still destroys me.  It is extremely difficult to operate in a system that perpetuates injustice.  It is difficult to internalize the problems of these communities.  I have certainly gotten better about attaining a peace of mind everyday after school.  But, I have a lot more to learn.
